The 5 Components of An Exceptional Story
What I look for and like when reading a novel
It’s the author’s job to make the reader want to keep reading. To get the reader to turn the page eagerly with increasing anticipation and trepidation.
If an author isn’t able to do that, and do that well and consistently, then either a) they’re writing for the wrong audience or b) they need to amp up their writing game.
It’s true; writing is an inherently selfish act.
I am writing my book for me. My own personal enjoyment.
That being said, if my writing is not interesting to others, no one else will want to read it. And my book idea is too good (I think) to keep to myself. I want to share it. I can’t wait to share it.
While I have that thought lingering towards the back of my cerebellum, it doesn’t faze me much; because since I like exciting, thrilling, page-turning books, and I am writing the book — I know that I’ll write it in a way that I would like to read. When I eventually do my full re-read and edits, if there’s any part that seems superfluous/boring/doesn’t move the story forward — I am planning to gut it (as I’m sure my beta readers — harshest of whom will be my sisters — will undoubtedly tell me regardless).
