When you don’t want to scare off readers

Ok so without giving anything about my upcoming novel away (I hope) I do want to dive into this topic a little. I’d say brace yourselves, but nothing scary is forthcoming — promise.

Writers write about what they know, what they’re interested in, what they think about.

I can’t help but think about politics almost 24/7 being an American living in America today. I just can’t. I care too much. It’s deeply personal to me and that passion is reflected in my writing.

On a different but similar note, similar due to its innate ‘tabooness’ in polite conversation, is religion and spirituality. Discussing my personal beliefs is not something I normally do; I’m usually the most comfortable keeping my beliefs close to my chest, so to speak. People close to me know this. It’s definitely not something I would advertise, especially in public or with strangers.

Hiding what you believe is hard to repress when writing, because my core beliefs that I’ve cultivated and developed over the years, are in essence, what makes me, “me.” I value my beliefs and principles very strongly.
